Oil, Acrylic, Watercolour, Mixed media? It can all be a minefield never mind the expense, do you often think or wonder if another medium you havent tried is worth the cost and time - Absolutely!
Often over the years I have tried many different mediums and if I hadn't I would have missed out on the joy and excitement that trying something new gives you. I started out in watercolour many years ago, then tried acrylics which at the time did not like as the colours looked dull and plasticy, now there are so many advances in the qualities of this medium they are much better quality. Fast forward a few years and my go to was mixed media using watercolour, acrylics, pencil, graphite, oil pastel plus many more which opens up a whole new world of opportunities to explore and experiment. You begin to understand materials and how they work together and obviously how they don't! For me they were a revelation and a joy, not really producing anything worthwhile but getting to grips with how they interacted with one another.
It's only in the past five years or so I have started using oils and have fell in love with the buttery texture and how forgiving they are, yes you have to learn about mediums wait for them to dry etc but it is really worth it. The layers you can produce surpass all other mediums for me and the transparency that you can achieve, you can easily erase things when they are not working and somehow it's wonderful getting messy !
So over the years I am still using all these medias when the mood takes me and I wouldn't change it for the world, it's lovely to be able to swap and change as sometimes oil may not be suitable for the situation or environment.
Wishing you some fantastic material adventures!!!! Here's a few of different medias :-)
